What is Botox - Wrinkle Reduction?
Botulinium is a toxin from Clostridium Botulinium, a bacteria. It causes paralysis of nerve conduction to muscles. Since 1980 it has been used in a purified form and in tiny amounts by ophthalmologists to correct squints. In 1998, an American dermatologist, whose wife was an opthalmologist working with Botulinium Toxin, picked up on her observation that her patients lost their facial lines. He devised a schedule of usage to do this. After treating many thousands of patients we know that this is a safe and effective treatment of facial lines around the forehead and eyes. The benefits are particularly noticeable in people who frown frequently and consequently may look angry or stressed.
The treatment involves from 5 to 15 small injections at one time into the areas being treated. The needle used is very fine and so the procedure is relatively painless. The effect will become evident from 4-6 days later, with frown lines being alleviated. As part of the treatment you may no longer be able to frown – this may feel strange at first but you will quickly becomes used to it. The effect lasts for about four months with further injections after this time often lasting longer. Sometimes after 2 or 3 treatments the nerve receptors may not regrow and the effects will be permanent.
After the treatment the only result is some small needle marks which will soon fade. Make-up can be applied and immediately and you can return to work. You should sit or stand upright and avoid massaging the area for 4 hours after treatment, in order to limit the spread of Botulinium Toxin to untreated areas.
The treatment is safe but as with all drugs we would not recommend it for children and pregnant or breast feeding women.
Patients with Myaesthenia Gravis and patients taking aminoglycoside antibiotics ( eg. Gentamicin, Soframycin, Tobramycin) should not have Botulinium Toxin.
The treatment is very safe for cosmetic use as we inject some distance from the eye. The doses used are small so the larger facial muscles are unaffected. The main potential complication is called ptosis or drooping eyelid. This is uncommon and is temporary, usually lasting 3 days or a little longer. Importantly, neoSKiN's treatments require no downtime from your busy life.
